When AddThis launched it was a very welcome addition to the blogging tool set. No longer did we need to clumsily add icons or images and links to the bottom of each web page. We simply added a few lines of code to our blog templates and a row of sharing buttons would appear. Like magic.

But the best thing of all was the analytics. AddThis were ahead of the game in providing decent analytics your posts, click throughs and so on. In the process, they have accumulated a wealth of information about WHAT we share and WHY. This infographic celebrates AddThis’ five year anniversary.

Thursday Netflix Inc. CEO Reed Hastings joined the board of directors at Facebook. This is an interesting pair considering the rivalry seen between the two media giants once Facebook made a video streaming deal with Warner Bros. last month. This, of course, may also be the reason for the quick partnership.

It only seems natural that the biggest names in online movies and socializing would join forces as young people are the largest audience for both markets. The socializing between Facebook friends over recommended movies and TV shows could greatly increase the traffic to Netflix and give users another reason to log on to the social media site for hours. Friends already share thoughts on everything they do via the internet – why not add movies in too?

The joining of these two forces could be big as both already share their applications over all major devices – home gaming consoles, tablets, phones and of course computers. This could mean major investment jumps for both brands – Netflix has already seen a rise in interest in its shares.

Facebook’s ability as a video rental site has already been established via the Warner Bros. renting system which uses Facebook “credits” to purchase movies. This ability combined with Microsoft’s dabbling in a Facebook partnership via partial ownership could make Facebook the powerhouse that could take down larger rival Google.

Coincidentally – or not so much– Hastings is also a Microsoft board member. This link between these big companies could lead to some major power plays soon to come, the first of which is said to appear quite soon: Facebook will be opening its shares to the public early next year.

Google captured 72.15 percent of all U.S. searches in September and gained one percent in search share month-over-month, according to a new report from Hitwise.

Bing powered search received 23.64 percent of searches for the month with Yahoo Search and Bing receiving 13.54 percent and 10.10 percent, respectively. The remaining 65 search engines1 in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis report accounted for 4.22 percent of U.S. searches.

Search engines continue to be the primary way that Internet users navigate to key industry categories. Comparing August 2010 with September 2010, shopping and social networking categories showed double-digit increases in their share of traffic coming directly from search engines.

Google’s percentage of upstream traffic grew for the Automotive, Shopping and Travel categories. Bing saw double-digit growth in four categories — automotive, health, shopping and travel — including a 61 percent increase in the health category.

Longer search queries — those averaging five to eight words long — decreased 1 percent from August 2010 to September 2010. Seven-word searches and searches of eight or more words increased 1 percent and 4 percent, respectively. One-word searches increased 3 percent. Two-word searches represented the majority of searches, amounting to 24.02 percent of all queries. Shorter search queries — one to four words — were flat from August 2010 to September 2010.
